Creating a College Search List

Choosing the right college is a very important task, as you will be spending the next four or five years in that institution after high school. If you’re confused on which school to choose, creating a college search list can greatly help you in making the best decision.

What a college search list should contain

Basically, according to How to Get In, a college search list should list down schools based on the following factors:

Location: A lot of students have a gut feeling as to whether they want to go to school far away or close to home. When putting together a list of schools, take that feeling into account.

Location is a very important factor when choosing the right college. If you think you will thrive in a learning environment that’s close to home, opt for a school that is near your hometown. On the other hand, if you prefer a school that will let you experience how it’s like to live on your own, then choose a school that’s located in another state.

Admission Requirements: Unfortunately, most schools do have admission requirements that are strictly adhered to. Most schools take your GPA and SAT scores very seriously so it is important to look at schools that are within your league academically.

Because some of your target schools may be highly selective, it’s always best to have backup options. These are schools that you plan to apply to in case you weren’t admitted by your top school choice.

Programs Offered: What are you interested in studying? It is important to choose schools that offer programs in your chosen area of study. For example, do not choose a business school if you want to study education.

Of course, you’d have to choose a college that offers the program that you are truly interested in. Choosing a college that doesn’t offer excellent programs is useless, since high quality programs can spell the difference between college years that were well spent and years that were wasted away on useless school programs.

Aside from creating a college search list, one good way of helping you make the right decision is to visit campuses during the summer, as College Confidential states:

Check out the neighborhood off-campus. Allow enough time to get a sense of where each college is located. Visit local shops, cafes, restaurants, etc., to get a better feel for the area.

Visiting college campuses is a good idea on getting the vibe of a specific learning environment. This way, you will be able to see for yourself whether a school is the perfect one for your needs academically and emotionally.
