What You Need to know About SUNY Stony Brook

Stony Brook is a public research university in Stony Brook in Long Island, New York and is one of the few university centers in the State University of New York system. Relatively young compared to its other counterparts, Stony Brook was founded in 1957 but has quickly made a name for itself among the top research universities in the country.

The university is now home to different schools and colleges. These include the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Graduate School, the School of Dental Medicine, the School of Health and Technology Management, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and the School of Journalism.

Alumni

Stony Brook has produced famous alumni who have gone on to win the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer, the Obie Award, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal Awards. These include Jeff Raskin, co creator of the Mac computer, John Hennessy, president of Stanford University, Scott Higham, winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize, and Jorge Benach, a member of the team who discovered Lyme disease.

Rankings and reviews

Stony Brook was included in the 33 universities in The Center’s Top American Research Universities that ranked 26th to the 50th in the national category in 2005. In 2008, the university was ranked by US News and World Report as 45th in the category of top public national universities and 96th in the best national universities category, becoming the only school in Long Island in the top 100. In 2007, the school was, for the sixth time, ranked by US News and World Report as among the 100 top universities (national category) in the United States and is included in the top 50 in public national universities.

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance also ranked the university 34th in best value among the country’s public institutions for in-state schools. In 2008, it was also ranked as the 127th best university in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement. It was placed by the Global University Ranking 2009 among the top 74 to 77 universities in the world.

Stony Brook is known as one of the best universities in the country. Its accredited graduate programs have been recognized as among the top in the country. An example is the clinical psychology program which was ranked 9th in the school’s top 10 programs.

Admission tips

The university requires applicants to submit SAT and ACT scores, records of secondary school GPA, secondary school rankings, as well as recommendation letters. Other factors that are considered include extracurricular activities, and the applicant’s admission essay.
